Fuel Filler will not Fill. Boyd's Rear Fuel Cell. Need Advice plz
2 Attachment(s)
I'm still messing around with the restoration of her but I decided to take her out for a spin. Trying to get more motivation to finish her.
I wanted to try out my fuel filler that I designed for my Boyd's Fuel Cell (Side Fill) I bought a vented gas cap too. The gas pump immediately clicks and won't fill at all. It's really frustrating cause I have a lot of time involved with this!! I'm not sure what the problem is so I'm hoping someone has an idea?? I'm assuming it's the angle of the hose - I didn't want to cut a bigger hole in the bed Any input is appreciated Here's a couple pictures of the setup. |

you have too much of a droop in the line you have created a pee trap you need to make it slope to the tank more without the dip in the hose maybe use a elbow where it comes out the floor

It won't burp the air out with that drop in it. Try a 45* elbow up as high as you can with a slope into the tank.

It is only a guess but I would say based off of your photo that your fill hose is working like a p-trap on a sink drain. It looks like you may be able to shorten the hose some. You want the tank inlet to be the lowest point of the filler tube/hose.
If gas is sitting low in the hose, it will not let it vent properly. |

I have a very similar setup to yours and had the same problem initially. I ended up cutting holes in the support member (see pic, sorry its sideways) to eliminate the droop in the hose and also ended up needing a larger vent tube. Hope this helps, good luck.

I agree with the others, you can't have a droop in your hose like that. You are not pumping fuel through that line, you are pouring it. It will not pour uphill.

I have a Boyd's side fill tank in my step side. I put a filler door on the inside of the box side. I went down to the exhaust shop and they bent me up a elbow out of 2 inch tubing. Then I just have two small pieces of fuel hose and some clamps to connect it. The tube is a straight shot into the filler elbow. Plus I also ran another hose from the roll over valve elbow up above the height of the gas cap.

Here's a link to some angled filler hoses at O'Reilly. I'm sure any parts house will have them, O'Reilly is just what popped up first.

A rubber 90 and a straight section of stainless or a stainless 90 and a short straight section of rubber or some other combination of tube and hose would work better than what you have. Clamps and ells are available at any autoparts store the stainless you can get from summit, Jegs, Burns etc. That's how I solved my rad hose problem and it does look better than ribbed hose. |

The biggest problem I see is that your vent line also dips with the filler neck. I would move the vent line higher so that fluid can't get trapped in it. The dip in the filler hose should not make a large difference as long as the vent line is large enough and free of obstructions.

Seen this problem many times before. It is your fill line. Shorten the hose. WES

Cut that hose and just use an aluminum elbow at the bend.
