This confused the heck out of me.
But I think I have it ironed out now.
Here is the SPID from my '71 "Cheyenne" http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c2...ps3cee1fd0.jpg I had my doubts for a moment when I saw the CUSTOM SPORT TRUCK beside Z84, I assume my truck is just earlier production. The Cheyenne badges don't look like they were ever off the truck. I'm working on decoding all the options, slightly bummed that my white side truck was built as a 572, (white top). Am I correct that the "F" means it was built in Flint? |
Re: This confused the heck out of me.
Yes, Flint build for your truck.
Nice options!! |
Re: This confused the heck out of me.
What's a dome lamp switch? Can you have one at the same time as a cargo light?
|
Re: This confused the heck out of me.
No idea, but the truck also has a cargo light.
|
Re: This confused the heck out of me.
Dome lamp switch is the door pins in the jamb (think next to the E-Brake)
When you open the doors...lights come on, otherwise you can only turn them on by twisting the light switch knob until it clicks. |

A VIN with the sequential portion that starts with an "8" is pretty high = late in the model year. K |
Re: This confused the heck out of me.
Just the "CUSTOM SPORT TRUCK" next to the Z84 code. Of course whoever was typing that was probably just used to doing it that way.
Isn't Z84 usually described as something else, or was it a Flint thing?, I had a brief panic moment that I didn't have a real Cheyenne after all. (First to admit I have loads to learn) Keith, I have spent about three hours off and on today reading your posts about GM, racing, Pontiac etc, Awesome stuff, you need to write a book! |

I'm surprised that as a fleet vehicle you couldn't turn off the dome light (like I thought this switch did). Leave a door open and there goes the battery. |
Re: This confused the heck out of me.
RPO Z84 was Cheyenne in 71-72 and CST from 67-70. Descriptions vary greatly over the years, during the years and between plants.
C60 is the door operated dome lamp, included on 71 Custom Deluxe, Cheyenne and Cheyenne Supers its one of those persistant RPOs that appear on a SPID even if included with another option. "F" is the Flint assembly plant for your truck. 572 is indeed the Conventional Two-tone of 523 Dark Blue with a 521 White roof. At 800,000 plus you are pretty late in the year, IIRC 71 started at 600,000. |

;) One other comment though, just to clarify: there was not "a person" who sits and types out each SPID individually. The options and descriptions were pre-programmed into a primitive computer and then reprinted remotely based on that previous data. As Tim mentions, there was variation between model years and between plants, with the description sometimes varying a great deal from the actual engineering functional name. K |
Re: This confused the heck out of me.
Thanks everyone, really appreciate the information!
