gas tank repair
 

My 69 panel needs new tank and then I need more money. Tryin g to do a get by repair job w/o spending a bunch. Had one small hole,welded it good there now. Inside has good amount of rust but all metal seems solid. Would like to get somethi9ng that would seal inside and help make tank last year or so till I can buy new one or weld up a SS tank.

Is there any cemical that I can poor into tank and coat inside with? I have used Kreem in motorcycle tanks but at a cost of about hundred bucks its getting towards half of new tank after you buy the rest of the stuff to prep tank. ANything cheaper?

My dad had a radiator, A/C and fuel tank repair shop. He used liquid oven cleaner from the janitorial supply. A gallon cost about $20.00. Cleans out everything including the rust. I have used it, when I was done the inside of the tank was shiny silver. Soldered up all the holes with a hand torch. Hasn't leaked in years. Be VERY CAREFUL!!! This stuff has LYE in it.
I pulled my tank, drained it, left it all together, plugged all the outlets and vents, put the oven cleaner in. I put it in the back of my DD pick-up and drove to work and back for a week. Turned the tank an a different side each day. At he end of the week I poured out the nasty stuff, rust and all, rinsed with water, took it all apart, let the rest of the water evaporate in the sun. Fixed the holes and Bobs your uncle.
Pour the nasty stuff back into the bottle and dispose of properly. Your kids or grand kids will thank you.

POR-15 worked well for me on a Blazer tank. Guy

Have looked at a kit with por 15 it had that,rust remover and cleaner not bad price i think it was 60 bucks.Thinking it may be what I go with also. Isn't that same thing sprayed on rust repairs on cars?

Yeah, I think so. I know a couple of body guys that always use a rust inhibitor. I got the POR-15 from a friend and had nothing to loose but first I soaked the tank with muriatic acid to loosen the crud then I rinsed it completely. Added in the POR-!5 and it came out great.

after more research I found cpl new tanks for 175 to 200 bucks and at that point spending 6o or 70 to repair one that may or may not last seems stupid. Going to order new tank monday morning.
