Fan hitting shroud
 

As the title says, my fan is hitting the shroud on at the bottom. It is centered left to right. I have put in all new cab, core support and radiator mounts. My first thought was the engine mounts were worn out. After replacing the mounts, adding two washers to the top of the shroud mount and torqueing down the core support, the fan just barely clears the shroud... I'm talking a 1/16" or less.. Is there anything else I can do to vertically center the fan? Thanks ahead of time!

Maybe 6 & 8 cyl. engine perches are different and your truck has lower ones?
Or core support bushings need to be tighten a little bit more, in order to compress enough?

rotate the shoud it looks as if you have the bottom on top

The fan in my 72 4X4 used to hit the shroud, it's the stock fan but it must have been hitting the bottom of the shroud because the PO cut about an inch of the shroud off at the bottom. I wish he hadn't because I'm sure it would have drawn more air if it was set up right and not cut. I can't see why it hit, hopefully someone has solved this issue and can help,

I think that CDOWNS might have got it right. I currently have the shroud out of my 4x4 so i could fix a crack on it, but yours dose look to be upside down. Try rotating it.

the bolt pattern won't allow it to be put in upside down....

BINGO!!! When I replaced my core support, I noticed how broke down the old bushings were. Tighten them down, that will give you the gap you are looking for.....remember, a little goes a long way! ;)

I agree with Joe, the fan shroud does not have mounting holes on both sides. The bottom of the shroud is designed to fit into clips on the radiator support.

I also agree to double check your engine mount perches and trans mount/trans cross member. If any of it is incorrect, it will cause your problem. How is the angle of the drive train? Looking at your photo, I would try shimming the trans mount to change the angle. This would pull the bottom of the fan away from the shroud and push the top of the fan a little more into the shroud. Simple to try and see what happens.

You guys are right the bolt pattern wouldn't allow the shroud to be put in upside down. Snapped a pick of my factory fan shroud. But the bottom dose use jclips and sheet metal screws to keep it in place, like the top.

Update: I torqued the core support down to 60 Ft lbs. I also added a 1/2" spacer to the top shroud bolts. I have maybe 1/8" clearance, which still isn't enough.

The shroud is on correct. The drivetrain angle is very minor. Shimming the trans mounts would bring the fan into the shroud more. Shimming the engine would help but I don't want to go that route...

Unless anyone has any other ideas, unfortunately, I think I will do some trimming on the shroud...

Ate you using the stright 6 skinny mounts or the v8 mounts? Or maybe updated to the 70s clamshell mounts?
And isint there a difference between the 2 and 4wd fan shrouds?

Did you buy that shroud or was it your stock shroud? I'm running without one as I couldn't get one to fit right either. My V8 is on the I6 mounts so I figured that was why it didn't sit right. Maybe others could post how much clearance they have. Hate to cut up a brand new shroud...

It is the original shroud along with the original type mounts. The old mounts were the same as the ones I put in. Also, the truck has always had a 350 according to the build sheet.

I might be wrong in my thinking, but don't you also have to tighten up on the front cab bushings also? the core support is bolted to the fenders, which is bolted to the front of the cab. tightening the core support alone can put alot of pressure on the bolts holding the back of the fenders to the cab... Am I thinking wrong????

Hamjet you are thinking correct. But also my fenders are only loosely bolted to the core support as of now.
