If you are ever in the Phoenix area...

5 Attachment(s)
Just wanted to share. I am in the Phoenix area this week for work and had some time off today. I managed in my research for salvage yards to runs across Desert Valley Auto Parts. This is the yard they make the show "Desert Car Kings" about.

Pay them $2.00 and get to look at 10,000 vehicles from 1960's to 1980's. I think I counted about 25 67-72 Chevy trucks. If you can think of it, they probably have at least 10-20 of they same make and models.

I took 325 photos while I was there and here are some of the 67-72 parts. I think there prices might be a little on the high side. I asked about a gauge cluster and the guy at the counter said $100.00. If you have ever seen a gauge cluster that has been out in the hot dry Arizona sun, you will pass on them quickly.

Sheet metal is another story, if it has not been beat up at the yard or before it got there, it is going to be rust free. Lots of nice sheet metal there.

If your in the area, it is in North Phoenix. You can google Desert Valley Auto Parts and get more information.

Thought I would share,
Take care,
Tom

Thanks for the info Tom. I just can't get my head around paying 2.00 or anything to enter a business.

I'm 2 hours away, but we've got junkyards in Tucson. The ''Vintage Vehicle Park and Petting Zoo'' concept doesn't do a lot for me. Also, any junkyard with national basic cable exposure is gonna jack up their prices.
It's a common problem here-abouts, with well-heeled collectors from the rust belt paying top dollar for Arizona "Rust-Free" parts, the good stuff gets fished out or over-priced to us locals. Sometimes I've had to make a road trip to California to get rarer 67-72 parts.

Coming from and living in Michigan my whole life, you have to understand that seeing rust free sheet metal gives me goosebumps (the good kind). The earliest model year vehicle you are going to find in just about any Michigan salvage yard is around 1990 (complete with rust up to the door handles) and most will not let you roam around.

I did not mind paying $2.00 to look around. I could have spent the whole day there but Arizona sun starts to get really hot on a bald head around 11:00 am ;) This was much better than spending $20.00 for a movie and a bucket of pop corn in my opinion.

I do agree that the Hollywood-ization (if that is even a word) has escalated the prices of a lot of things like salvage cars. There t-shirt prices ($25-$27) just like Gas Monkey Garage and Orange County Choppers are enough to cover every employees salary.

However you want to look at it, there is a lot of classic American iron that can be saved from the crusher.

No sir. There were 4 people at the counter, none that I recognized from the show.

Other than t-shirt sales, you would never know there was a TV show based on this place.

Still one of the coolest classic car and truck yards I have been too.

I used to go here a lot but now I dont think I'll go back. They have lost me as a customer they tend to treat you as stupid here or their prices can be way high also if you want something like a door panel they will try to make you buy the whole door. I've been burned here to many times just my experience.

Sounds like south east Michigan is the perfect place for you to reside...no worries about it being too sunny here.

;)

Re: If you are ever in the Phoenix area...

I live in Phoenix, and go to Desert Valley every so often just for the entertainment - definitely worth the $2. I have bought a few parts from them, and one time when I thought their price was unreasonable was able to talk them down.

A similar place about 45 minutes south of Phoenix is Hidden Valley Auto Parts in Maricopa.
Similar kind of place, except they have cars and trucks back into the 30s and 40s as well.
