replacement heater blower motor
 

Has anyone else purchased a new heater blower motor? I just bought one and it has a fairly larger (maybe 3/4 inch) hole in one side of the motor housing. I know on some models besides our style, this would be where a cooling tube would connect. Ours obviously do not have such a cooling tube. The parts store guys have looked through all of their sources and they cannot get one that does not have this hole. It just doesn't seem right to leave this open to the environment. Has anyone else noticed this, and if so, what did you do?

My 69 with A/C uses the cooling tube. I THINK the non-A/C trucks did not.
If that's correct, both types of fans should be available. If not, I'd plug the hole.

hmmm. Well maybe that's the issue then. I did tell them several times that it did NOT have air conditioning. However, I did notice today that the motor on the replacement did seem a little larger. Don't know if that meant anything at all though.

Mine has AC, but a friend up in Canada told me that the first mod he makes to any of these trucks (few if any of which have AC up there) is to swap in an AC fan in place of the stock heater fan. Apparently they interchange but the AC one is much more powerful, which makes sense that it'd have a larger motor.

I can't confirm any of this, so don't buy parts based on my speculation, but it could be a cheap and worthwhile upgrade if true.

Any idea what he does with the hole for the cooling tube?

My 84 blazer with ac uses the same motor as my 67 mounting pattern wise but it has the tube sticking out of it. I bet its an ac blower motor.

I've read that later motors run faster than the sleepy early ones.

I replaced mine non a/c heater motor. newer style, direct fit, I think I got it at Auto Zone for around 28 bucks. Higher fan speed also. I just moved and my stuff is packed. Someone will chime in on this. I will look through some of my older threads. I'm thinking I must have mentioned the part number.

Here's the info I got. I didn't know about changing the fan (squirrel cage) so that's an important detail.

"it was a long time ago but if I recall I just put a black rubber grommet in the plate where the hose/ vent was in the heater motor as the air heater motor is vented as you say. I also think that when I changed the heater motor I had to loosen a few of the bolts on the inner fender and move it an inch or so to get the heater motor with the squirrel cage in. I did have to get an air conditioning squirrel cage as it is about an inch thicker. It fit in the stock non air heater box perfect. It makes a huge difference on how much it blows. This is an easy fix and well worth the effort. "

FYI... Here's a link to a recent discussion we had about the squirrel cages. It appears that the A/C cage and heater only cage may be different as well.
