Stupid question about driveshafts, but...

...is the flange on the two piece driveshaft supposed to be right up against the center bearing? Because mine has about an inch and a half gap. I didn't think too much about it until today when I started to get to work on a transmission swap when the TH350 broke, and realized my truck had a 6" tailshaft instead of the 9" I though these trucks came with. Now I'm wondering if a previous owner stuck a correct length driveshaft on a wrong length transmission, or if I'm going to need to shorten the driveshaft.

Thanks! Guess I'd picked up some misinformation somewhere, and it's time for a shorter driveshaft.
