Best aftermarket am/fm radio?
 

Its time to buy a new am/fm radio for my truck. I don't need a cassette or cd plaver. But I would like one with a sirus port and quality sound. I have checked older posts and was hoping for any new or updated radio's out there. thanks Rick

I'm actually looking to. Haven't heard a lot of good about some of them and they are quite expensive. I'm thinking of a old Pioneer, Sony, or Alpine knob style and using the cassette adapter for phone music.

Check out Gary Tayman radio conversions. He takes stock am radios and converts them to an/fm with the factory face plate and knobs. You can add Bluetooth and an auxiliary cable to the radio to plug in your iPod or phone. He also does am/fm radios. They get a whole new case and all new guts. His radios are about 300$ and up. Great radio and in my opinion it sounds much better than an Autosound radio, and it also has the ability to run subs and amps. And you don't have to cut your dash.

I have a classic auto sounds radio in my truck. If u r dash isn't cut they fit right in and look factory. They also make a hidden setup u leave u r factory one in dash and mount radio somewhere else

I found this on Amazon and since I am SUPER cheap, it works for me. I haven't installed it in the glove box yet but it should work fine for a basic radio and iPhone hookup.

I bought a CAS radio. Took it back out and trashed it (where it belongs). I've had two old AM's converted to AM/FM by different people. May as well have used a tin can and a string. Good luck.

One of the best mods you can perform on these trucks in my opinion! Put a nice den radio in the dash and enjoy your favorite music as your driving, nothing better in the world as to hear some old Rock & Roll out of a 70's truck!:chevy:

I agree with you in principle Andy. The thing is if you want to keep your truck as original as possible then it is hard to make the choice to cut the dash and install a modern DIN stereo. I am agonizing whether or not to cut the dash on the truck I just bought. I almost wish someone had cut the dash before I bought the truck then the decision would be easy.

how good is the secret audio stuff? i am considering one for my 1960 chevy wagon so that i dont have to replace the good looking original radio in the dash that does not work.

I personally am a fan of Pioneer. Close to 15 years ago they came out with the MOS45 chip. I've ran this set up in a few different scenarios in a few different cars/ trucks. It provides 45 watts per channel and the ability to bridge the rears into 1 90 watt channel. I currently run a DEH-P6000 in my daily with a Kicker amp and Sub and Pioneer factory replacements.
Alpine makes good stuff also, they came out with a MOSFET 60 watt head unit a few years after Pioneers 45. I never had the chance to use it in a set up, but heard it perform and it's very nice.

I would like to here about your issues with custom auto sound , I have a few usa 630 units ,,,and they suck ,,,, the thumbdrive feature stops playing for no aperant reason ,,, in a few of their units ,,, not an issolated issue

This is one thing that does not bother me in the least. I do not plan to ever sell my truck. There is no reason not to put the best sound you can in your truck. If you really drive your truck as I do and you really like your truck then put the best you can afford in it. I have no regret!
My truck is no where near orignal though!:chevy:

Greg I wouldnt cut the dash, there are other options, especially since you prefer the stock look. OP there seems to be a few choices with purpose built aftermarket head units, or one can always use the glovebox and have a head unit with a remote. Have also seen some custom built small consoles that hold the unit, easily removeable. Where to place the speakers is another battle..

Audio quality is part statistical information, and part due to the quality of your hearing. I find it strange to see people dismiss the audio quality of certain products, and recommend products with equal or worse audio characteristics. Also, when you seek true quality audio fidelity, you shouldn't look towards ipod and similar equipment that compress and diminish the bit rate and frequency.

For original look I use Mike Hagan conversions. But, I use quality AM/FM/Cassette decks that people give me, just like the ones I would slap in after yanking out the crappy factory radio. I've used cassette decks since everyone was using 8-tracks (before in-dash). Still one of the best ways to listen to my music. Some of my tapes I recorded in the '70s. I use a cleaner and a head demagnetizer.

You guys that say you have issues with custom auto sounds must be doing something to them had mine in my 67 for 8 years now and I love it spoke to others local to , r with them and they all love them. Are you running amps and everything. Also knew a guy with a 70 El Camino that had the secret audio and he loved it.

don't buy custom autosound, mine lasted a year and the customer service is crap
