Gas Tank Carpet Install
 

I hung the carpet in place using the plastic clips that are sewn to the top of the carpet and clipped them to the metal edge of the gas tank..these clips are used to clip over the card board that covers the gas tank..In my case I did not have the cardboard and chose to not use the clips.

Next after deciding where I wanted the carpet to be fastened I used Velcro and stuck it to the tank. I stuck the opposite of the loop side of the Velcro to the tank ,,reason being is this side bends easier than the loop side to fit around bends on the tank and cab corner

I then took down the measurements and layed out the carpet and stuck the loop side of the Velcro in place on the carpet,, (notice the pieces of black plastics above the carpet in this photo..I cut the lip off of each of them (scissors)so to able me to have the carpet shoved up tight to the sheet metal of the cab ,,and beings I had no cardboard I did not need them

This is what the carpet at the passenger side corner looked like before and after I tucked it into place again I also I used Velcro to secure it to the metal cab corner.

The reason I used Velcro is ,,,just in case my sending unit went bad I could just pull the top of the carpet down and replace it ,,or if for some reason the gas lines had a problem I also could just pull the carpet off and fix the problem and stick it back on..

Now ,,as many of you have experienced ,,every thing just don't fit exactly right the first time (another good reason to use Velcro vrs Glue ,,as you can see my carpet was sagging terrible with the amount of Velcro I used ..

There will always be some sag because the tank is not an even surface ,as it has some shallow places that you cannot stick the carpet down in these places ..but with the two seat backs up against the carpet and the console closely up against the carpet then I figure there shouldn't be hardly any thing to disturb the carpet

So I went back to the store and bought more Velcro

I think it came out pretty good never the less,, each to his own liking of course ,, so here is a final results of what I came up with..

Note:: Velcro costs right now about $2.50 a foot and for every foot you need two feet because Velcro has a soft side and a Loop side to make it stick together ,,I used 12 feet X 2 = 24 feet x $2.50 = $60 ouch! but it to me is worth it to able me to take it off and on,,if needed..

Thank you Sir,,I have been wanting to do this gas tank carpet cover ever since I got the seats in 2011,,now its on to installing the seats and console ..Grease the truck and change the oil and put new anti- freeze in and its off on a sunny day to ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,just drive ,,don't matter where..

I am curious to know who all like this method to some other way,,

I like this idea, and the velcro is just another way to make it better.

I thought it would be a good way in case you had to remove it for some reason ,,and it cant take to much beaten back behind the seats and console..

Acually it hurt to dish that much for the Velcro ,,( but that's because I thought it was cheaper than that,) As you can see it cost me $60 for the Velcro ..I got it at a upholstery shop.. It is a much better Velcro than Jo-Annes where the wife use to go for material and threads..

And if you want you can have the Upholstery shop sew the Velcro to the carpet if needed..

Looks good! I've been thinking about how I'm going to go about this also. The thought crossed my mind to take the cardboard gas tank cover and glue the carpet to it so it has a nice smooth appearance. Has anyone ever tried this?

Those plastic clips do not clip to the gas tank. They to clip to the cardboard tank cover that goes over the tank. That will raise the carpet up and bring it close to the metal above the tank.

Alhtough I have a bench seat, I did what trucks is taking about. My clips are on the card board which I'd still on the tank now with the carpet over it

Thanks for this information as to what the clips are to clip to ,,I got my info from search and now know that it was a false statement about why the clips do not fit the gas tank... I will edit my build up above so to be correct when others go to search to find ways to install carpet to their gas tanks..
