power steering is crazy easy.... feels wrong

72 gmc 3500. works better than any vehicle ive driven... sitting still at idle you can turn this thing with a finger nail... it turns so easy it feels like the tires aren't even touching the ground...im tempted to put a stabilizer shock on it... any thoughts?......

What is your secret? mine turns pretty good with one finger, I'm happy though. As long as it works good I'd go with it.:chevy:

I have had over 100 of these trucks and some of them steer just like you describe. I have no idea why some are like that. I just sold a 72 C/20 with 42k original miles that had the super easy steering.

Re: power steering is crazy easy.... feels wrong

My 69 has been easy since new. Those were the days of over boosted power steering and very little road feel. Everyone was just thrilled to not have to struggle with steering anymore. I don't know if a stabilizer would help much. Good question though.

The was a sales bulletin tagline. How much effort does it take to sell power steering? Two fingers!

All of the driving trucks I've had with power steering turn effortlessly as you describe. To me it feels better than a modern vehicle.

I think you may be used to present day "power steering" which requires a good deal more effort than the earlier units. Steering effort in my 2011 Ford Ranger is far higher than in my enormous 1958 Buick Roadmaster. My 1961 John Deere tractor really has "figer-tip steering" and it weighs 6,500 pounds! I guess there's a rationale for this but personally I love the old light-touch units.

Early power steering was over assisted. You lose the road feel. Some love it some hate it.

They sell pressure reduction kits that will increase the "feel" if you want. It's an insert you put in the pump outlet. I don't have a link handy but I bet someone here does.

Re: power steering is crazy easy.... feels wrong

the reason I asked this is it seems to be very easy to over correct after a bad spot in the road... you know, a pothole or bad bump in the road.... was thinking a stabilizer would firm up the steering enough to reduce that from happening. so you guys think i should just drive it more and get used to it?

Drive the truck everyday. You will get used to it. ;)

stabilizer in my 4x4 really doesn't help too much at all. it's still way too easy to steer.

Re: power steering is crazy easy.... feels wrong

It sounds like you could have some worn front end parts, you should check the tie rod ends and idler arm for wear. (not the ease of steering but because you mention the over correction when hitting bumps)

Re: power steering is crazy easy.... feels wrong

Where the pressure line go's into the pump. Remove the large fitting that screws into the pump. There is a pressure spring behind there. This spring is to stiff. You need to find a weaker spring. If you can't find one, as a last resort you can shorten it one coil at a time. You will have to experiment to find the feal your looking for. Just remember the weaker the spring the more effort you have to give to steer the vehicle. Hope this helps!
