Where is 2 nd gear ?

I have a '69 G 10 3 spd 6 cyl. More oftenthan not, can't get into second from 1st. Any thoughts from the thoughtful ?

Up and away. Coming out of first, you take pressure off the lever, it will spring towards the dash, push up into 2nd. Check for bent linkage if it doesn't want to go.

I'm old school (62 yrs old) so I'm familiar with shift pattern . Second gear does not want to "drop down" the column once past neutral. Is there or should there be a bushing on the column linkage?

Try spraying some PB Blaster or other good penetrating oil (not WD-40) into the opening where the shift lever goes into the column. Use an extension and try to get it down inside the tube. Then put it in neutral and pull the lever up toward you and push it back down toward the dash a few times to see if it frees it up. Also spray some down at the bottom of the column where the shift levers are.....

Is it possible that its not coming out of first instead of not going into second. Do the two links have to be syncronized. so it comes out of first at the same time it goes into second?

Basically you shift it up out of first to neutral, then push the lever towards the dash, then up into second. If you can't put the shift lever in neutral and pull it up towards you and push it down towards the dash and have the knob move a couple of inches then it is not working correctly.

Did you try what I suggested in my last post?
