Door dilemma
1 Attachment(s)
LYou east coast guys are going to be hating me for even posting this in sure...(I'm from the east coast so I can relate at heart:) ) I scored a nice set of rust free/ and mostly dent free doors from a 71 yesterday for $40. It was such a good deal I couldn't resist. I've already got an ok set of 72's I had planned to use for my K/20. Here's what I'm contemplating, the 72's are mostly rust free but have small rust spots at each lower corner of each door, that's it tho, no rust anywhere else. They also have very some small dents and dings. Here's my problem. My truck is a 72 so the latter set I described is correct for the year. However the new set I've got will require 3/4 less work to get them perfect. I've got a nice set of 72 panels that will go on which ever I choose. What do your guys think? Should I keep it year correct or take the shortcut?
Pics of each set incoming! http://i1262.photobucket.com/albums/...ps14d4d76b.jpg The orange is an example of the 72's the passenger side is mostly identical The ochre are the 71's. There's a very small amount of mud in the bottom of one but it's a small dent.no rust thru. |
Re: Door dilemma
What kind of build are you doing? Stock or near stock obviously negates the use of anything other than year correct parts.
Custom, well that's a different story. The lines of a 67-71 are clean inside, then in 72 they added that countersunk screw, that I feel degrades the appearance. Obviously for added support, but I just don't get it. :dohh: |
Re: Door dilemma
Tyler I think you should use the 72 doors and bring the 71 doors to me on your next visit back home LOL !!!!! Really nice score I need to take a road trip to your area with a BIG trailer what do you think

Re: Door dilemma
will the 72 door panals mount on the 71 with no mods?

As far as my build goes I had originally planned a mostly stock year/spid correct build with a few minor additions like truck tilt, tach, stowage box bed and front hooks. That's kinda why I'm hung up on it I suppose. I will use my olive 72 door panels regardless, so that's not a concern. As for the panels I saw on here a while back where somebody used 72's on a 71 and swapped the door/window controls and such from a 72 to the 71 doors. Seemed like it was fairly simple and only had to drill a few holes for the clips from the 72 panels. Any other opinions? |

I've also contemplated something that may be a bit sinful but, I was thinking I may just cut the vent window screw hole out of the Orange doors and weld them into the ochre doors. It would take minimal body work to do it and I could have the best of both worlds. I could then swap the 67-71 style vent window area to the 72 doors. All just thoughts at this point. I'm kinda leaning on the 67-71 although I really did want to keep it 72 correct. It's just less money, time and work in the long run. |
Re: Door dilemma
Use the correct year doors and do the additional repairs to make them great. I'm sure you'll find a cab to match those nice doors if you patiently wait.
How can you tell the difference between 67-71 doors and 72 doors? Bill |
Re: Door dilemma
IMO the less work you have to put into something the better, make it easy on yourself.
