Just put in my HEI
I just put in my HEI setup and it is so nice. More power, easier starting. Man I love this thing. I am never going to own a set of point again! Just wanted to let you all know and thanks for the advice earlier.

You can't go wrong with HEI!

Darn right, these things rock...mine got me almost 20hp and at least 2mpg...along with the drivability boost...heh, I bet part of the mileage comes from how I can have it idle at 600 in gear now instead of near 900.

They have indoor plumbing now? What'll they think of next? Jokes aside, HEI is the best improvement I've done (mechanically speaking) to my truck. I would suggest it to anyone, and everyone!

I love the HEI on my truck. Besides changing caps and rotors, it never gives me any trouble at all. Something i have noticed, is that after putting HEI in a truck with points, the truck idles ALOT quieter than with points....

Alright guys, your making me feel bad! I can't run HEI, not enough room. Does anyone have a point size electronic distributor they wanna get rid of? MSD, Mallory, Accel?

put a PERTRONIX (look them up on the web) conversion in my BB Longhorn about 4 years ago and have never had to touch it since. All the advantages of an HEI but the cap, etc. looks stock. They have a new model now that can be installed while distributor is still in truck/engine.

I went with Pertronix II..Easy install plus it looks factory if thats important. I'm running a 402BB with a few upgrades. Summit, Jegs, plus others sell this HEI set up.

Thanks guys, I will check it out. I know that my local parts store sells those conversions. What about coil? Are you running the stock coil with the conversion?

Sorry Pont, I forgot to mention I also went with the Pertronix coil. I seem to remember it was rated at 40,000 volts. It's also bigger diameter so you will have to modify your holder somewhat. You wont have to change your wires either, same plugs and gap (if I remember). Like I said, I havn't had to touch it in over 4 years. Sweet!

Thanks rustfree, I priced one at the local parts store ($64). I think I can live with that price to get rid of points. They didn't have the coil so maybe I'll pick-up a hot coil in another brand like Accel or something.
Thanks again.......... ------------------ 67 SWB 4x4 - 396 BB / SM420 4 spd 8" lift / 15x14 Welds & 35X14.5 SSR's Grants Pass, OR |
