intermediate steering shaft

Should the intermediate shaft slide in & out on the end that connects to the steering shaft? I know that if the plastic pins have been sheared that it will slide in the middle.

Thanks, Lynn

Re: intermediate steering shaft

Once installed both ends should be stationary --- I like about 4 to 5 inches of the shafts together for use.

Depending on the application, it may be necessary to slide it in or out. Initially as I understand it was for the steering wheel to partially collapse to help cushioning the driver on an impact.

those pins shouldn't matter, as long as the shafts are tight inside one another....some movement won't be a problem. the problem with those shafts seems to be the "seal" sometimes it's hard to find, I read someone used a intermediate shaft from a jeep Cherokee or at least the seal off of one......

The pins are not sheared. I seem to have play in & out in the "head" where it mounts to the steering shaft. Was wondering if I am suppose to.

I'd say as long as you have axial movement-vs.side to side, you should be just fine.

Play where the shaft meets the mounting head to the steering gear may be a problem. Have someone take a look at it that has steering knowledge.
