What is this switch next to my carb?

Dumb question... What is this switch for that was mounted to the intake on my small block next to the carburetor? It was was hooked to the throttle linkage with a piece of fine cable, which appeared to pull the switch closed at full throttle. The black wire attached to the switch in the pic was just grounded to the bolt holding the switch to the manifold. I don't get it. Any ideas?

Just a guess, but i'm thinking it could be something, like a passing gear for one of the old overdrive units.

It's a newer throttle position switch mounted to an older transmission kick down switch bracket. The larger hole in the bracket was for this kind of switch:

Any idea what transmission the switch was used on? Or more specifically, is this thing at all relevent to the turbo 400 that is in my pickup now? It kinda looks like some leftover crap from whatever vehicle the engine originally came out of. I believe it's a late 70s model (truck is a 66, and no idea if trans. is stock). I'm not familiar with how these switches are wired, but it didn't appear to be connected to anything except the bolt holding the bracket on.

Ha! I like your style, Fatherof3.

Thanks for the input, fellas. Looks like I'll be investigating my transmission to see what happened to the wire that's supposed to be connected to that switch. It probably hasn't been hooked up in years. I've only driven the truck on a couple mile long test rides as I've been working on it for several months, so I didn't even notice.

Just when a guy thinks he knows everything...

Strangely similar to the wide open throttle switch to engage the nitrous system on my old Mustang.
