402 BBC accessory brackets
Putting a 454 in my truck from a 70 Chevelle. The brackets are obviously different (AC on wrong side, etc). Has anyone researched what model trucks/cars have the same brackets as an original 72 402 truck would've had? I would like this to look like a 402, but brackets specific to 72 trucks aren't easy to find or cheap. If a 73 Monte Carlo, for example, had the same brackets, that'd be good to know. I know my Chevelle water pump isn't right too.

Re: 402 BBC accessory brackets
68-72 trucks and pre-68(?) cars used short water pump brackets on big blocks. They are actually easier to find on trucks than cars.

Re: 402 BBC accessory brackets
As a bit of trivia/info, did the small blocks switch to passenger side alternator in '69 to match the cars? Or did they stay in pre-69 configuration like the big blocks?

Re: 402 BBC accessory brackets
Correct Alternator brackets for a big block 402 truck from 72 are 1 year only, however other years will work. Power steering and AC brackets are the same. In 68 the BB power steering reservoir had a bracket that mounted it off the fender.

Re: 402 BBC accessory brackets
i bought a big block accessory kit setup from the junkyard. Same thing, found the AC and alternator were on different sides then stock for my 72. I ended up the big block brackets from http://www.alangrovecomponents.com/Catalog.htm, including the PS pump bracket, crank pulley and water pump pulley. Oh, and ordered a new Sanden 508 style AC compressor.
The Alan Grove ppl know what they're talking about so give them a call if you're unsure which parts you need from them. |
Re: 402 BBC accessory brackets
Will a modern style AC compressor (vintage air) fit those brackets? How about an alternator I can get at autozone?

Re: 402 BBC accessory brackets
No, only the factory a-6 compressor or the aftermarket pro6-ten will fit factory brackets. They will not hold a sanden style compressor

Re: 402 BBC accessory brackets
Cars went to long pump in 69 and alternator swapped sides then is correct.
For the 427 I am building I am using brackets for a 68 Camaro 375/396 that are all deep groove. Currently will try mounting the car PS pump but that may change... There is a reason the truck had the remote reservoir. |
