Does anyone make a push bar with winch mount?
So I'm looking to mount a winch on the front of a 1972 chevy K10. I would really like to keep the stock chrome bumper and just ad a "push bar" that has a winch mount built to it. Does anyone make such a thing? I've seen pictures of a few but I don't know if they were home made or not.
Any help would be great! |
Re: Does anyone make a push bar with winch mount?
I work for Warn, so have looked around a bunch, unfortunately the answer is no. I'm going to mount an XD9000 behind the stock bumper in basically a hidden kit using our universal mount plate and some fabbed up brackets to the frame.

That would be a cool job! I love warn products. Here is a picture of one I spotted awhile back. I'm thinking I'll see if I can get a local fab shop to make me one like it. I definitely want to use an 8274 winch.
I did consider a hidden mount but as nice looking as the 8274 is, I can't see hiding it. |
Re: Does anyone make a push bar with winch mount?
you will have to have one made, I am going to put a 8274 on my 72 also, just haven't figured out whether I want to make something like what you are talking about or go with an old warn winch bumper, I have a nice chrome one from a 75 chevy truck...

Re: Does anyone make a push bar with winch mount?
They make push pars for 73 up..
I have one.. it's the ole school type.. with two tubes (crossmembers) I plan to make a template and reform the bumper cut out on the vertical bars.. to fit the outline of my 71 truck.. If it looks good.. It be easy to laser cut more.. |

Here are some cowcatchers from back in the day.

Re: Does anyone make a push bar with winch mount?
Nothing like that is made because it would be a very weak mount. Most guys who want to keep the front bumper mount the winch behind the bumper and put the fairlead where the tag goes. It sits strongly between the frame rails with no leverage stress and you get to see that bumper you want to keep. Talk about custom, and you can still mount a push bar if you want

Re: Does anyone make a push bar with winch mount?
CoatingGuy,
I have access to the installation instructions for the old WARN winch bumper that shows the frame extension brackets. I also have access to the grill guard mount we made for the 73 and up Chevy instructions that shows that parts we used. I'd be happy to send you copies if you are interested, send me a pm and I can e-mail them to you. Unfortunately I don't have drawings of the parts, these were drawn up before CAD. The 8274 winch is by far our best ever, I have one one my Land Rover, was out using it on a photo shoot just yesterday in the snow! Take a look at our facebook page Steve |

I was initially going to build a bumper. But I'm liking the behind bumper so much that I bought a steel hawse I'm going to have chromed and lose the big roller fairlead.
If you go behind the bumper you need to study the winch configurations. If you get the right winch(or make some concessions in your choice) you can do it with out really fabricating anything. You just need to cut an drill some heavy angle iron. You can check out the mounting of mine if you weed through this thread. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=698198 Attachment 1628434 |
Re: Does anyone make a push bar with winch mount?
Thanks for all the input. I appreciate it.
I'm pretty dead set on having the winch on the outside of the front bumper. Ive got a big intercooler down low that might interfere with a winch behind the bumper. Plus the 8274 is so big and bulky I doubt it would fit one back there anyway. I suppose the rite thing to do would be to build a regular winch bumper that had the strength to pull the truck through snow and not end up sling shotted into the trees. Outfield, yes I would love to see the Warn Winch bumper install instructions. I wonder if it gives dimensions? I'll pm you. |
Re: Does anyone make a push bar with winch mount?
I had talked to a fella at Hickey Enterprises a year and a half ago and he had told me that they planned to reproduce their original push bar winch mount. He thought they would be released in the Spring of 2016. I haven't seen anything on their website yet.

Re: Does anyone make a push bar with winch mount?
If I were really going to use my winch a lot I would probably build a bumper. I do like to have access to the drum. Plus I like it mounted a bit higher. But since I got the hickey and mounting iron. It's in, and probably staying where it's at.
The 8274 spur gear is a great winch. But you will be most limited in your mounting options with that winch. That said, I would like one! Anyhow, I don't think your going to find any kind of a straight bolt on. You probably need to dust off the welder. Keep us updated on what you find. |

Re: Does anyone make a push bar with winch mount?
This is true, as much as I hate to say it, the winch won't get used very often I doubt. I've got a 1971 Cheyenne Super that has a warn 12,000 in a homemade bumper that my dad and grandfather built back in the 70's. It stays chained up almost year round for local recoveries.
Thanks for posting the warn info. And yes I will certainly keep this updated. |

Hi Coatingguy,
I have attahced the instructions for the newer Classic bumper that you will see on Craigslist from time to time for a 72 and older Chevy. I saw the earlier bumper instructions in our file too. I never looked at it that closely, but the earlier '69 style bumper is shaped a little different then the Classic, which I had on a '69 and '74 Chevy in the past. I have also attached the 73 and up Chevy Combo Kit / Grill Guard for you reference too. The 8274 would bolt in to either of these. Hope this helps Quote:

Sure thing, I'll get it out this evening and start a thread for it and do my best. It's really all common materials besides the stamped c channel that is the face of the bumper. |
