1972 rear leaf spring shackle

Can anyone tell me the point of these ridges on the ends of this pin ? I ordered some new shackles and the pins were too long and did not fit into the housing where the shackle is supposed to lie. So I had to grind them down, there for grinding down these little ridges . It's obviously supposed to grip the pin to the housing but what's the worst that can happen if the ridges our ground off and the surface is smooth ?

the pin you refer to is the sleeve of the bushing...anyway it grips so there is not metal to metal moving contact between the sleeve and the bolt, prevents squeaks and wear between the sleeve and bolt.

It will do its job, just keep an eye on it for wear and I guess grease it up.
