Aftermarket A/C units/kits
 

I searched for best kits and some older threads came up from 2009. I was looking for more recent info on what's worked for you.

We are working with someone that's a dealer for Classic Auto Air. But we are looking to try to use a "factory looking" switch panel. I know a couple of the companies will offer to rebuild the switch panel too. If we need to we will buy a factory looking A/C switch panel that came in factory A/C trucks. Ours is a non A/C truck.

I did the Classic Auto Air...kind of wished I had kept the original control unit; however, the unit itself has been incredible (2 months in)

I do like the modern servo-based units

Thanks. I just think with the look we're going for it would work better to have an original looking switch panel with a top of the line aftermarket unit behind the dash.

Justin, we went with the Vintage Air SureFit kit specifically built for '67-72 C-10s. You can get the kit for either a factory air conditioned dash or to convert a non-air dash over.

The cool thing about the Vintage Air Kit is that you can use the factory control module. It comes with instructions to modify the factory levers to be operated by the computer ECM from the unit. It's pretty slick!

was the install on a original a/c cab? or did you cut in your center vent?

I'm in the same boat. I'm restoring my '72 Cheyenne Super and I'm going with the Vintage Air unit. Little more $$, but looks very clean and easy install.

I put Vintage Air in my non AC truck, I cut in the vents holes and used original equipment AC vents and control. The Vintage Air kit integrates very well.

Ours was installed in an AC cab and when you order the kit you need to specify AC or non AC cab. The factory AC kit uses some of your existing ductwork. The Non AC kit has some different components in it.

By the way, the factory control unit when modified doesn't use the original fan switch.

Our cab is non a/c. I would prefer to not cut holes in the dash for vents. Does the kit you're recommending require doing this? I thought I would include a pic of the oem a/c control panel for you or anyone else interested in the thread:

I'd never even seen one of these til yesterday, and it's pretty neat that the letters match those in the dash...

Yes..you have to cut the center and two side vent holes. Template is provided.
Check with them...they may have an under dash vent system.

I've seen a kit or two that have an option for in dash vents or under dash vents but can't remember what company they are.

Look at OLD AIR products it has under dash vents and not sure if you have to use their controller.

+1 for Vintage Air Gen IV SureFit. Cutting the dash isn't hard at all and the vents look great once installed. Just got the truck back on the road late fall so can't speak for how well the A/C works but the heat is awesome!

I have old air from Ft Worth. It used the existing non ac heater controls. I did cut side holes but did not cut the center. I used an under dash center for a while but did not like the cluttered look so my center hoses just point down out of site in the center. I have no preference over old air or vintage.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm sure we're going with a Vintage Air kit as we like the original looking A/C and heat panel. We just haven't figured out what we're going to do with the vents yet.
