Is this an uncommon combo?

My friend showed me how new toy today,1969 GMC 1500 V6 ,TH400, AC,Pb,ps, heavy rear springs and factory camper wiring. This must have been a special order truck and it appears to have had an in bed camper on it most of its life. No history as it was gleaned from a local junkyard. Runs fine ,usual rust on the rockets and door bottoms. I will try to get a picture of the spid if I can figure out how to post it. Any thoughts or comments???

That be a pretty rare combo; last year for the GMC V-6 and all those options with it as well. Must have been a special order truck; Love to see photos.

Inline 6 or actual V6?
Did they make a V6 in'69 or newer engine?
Either way I would think unusual to have the TH400 trans
With it.

My Dad had a similar '68 GMC 910 that had been ordered for pulling a horse trailer. It had HD suspension, overloaders, TH400, and a bunch of stuff... but manual drum brakes!

I loved my 305 V6. I wonder what the displacement of your friend's V6 is.

The GMC V6 was offered as a 305 and I believe a 351 as well. Low RPM stump pullers.

They produced them all the way up to 478 CID, but I think those were only available in large trucks. There was also a V12 version that was basically two V6 engines mated together, as well as a diesel version called the Toro-Flow.

And they were definitely stump pullers. My 305 would haul my father-in-law's big boat better than his Ford 390.

Displacement will be stamped on the deck in front of the head on the passenger side.

These old V6's are definitely bad to the bone - building a hot 478 for my '72 K20 as we speak.

Re: Is this an uncommon combo?

The GMC V6s are torquey truck motors, so the TH400 was the common combination for automatic. Sounds like a nice truck, but I see nothing uncommon about any of what is described.

Thanks for all the input so far. The engine is stamped 305 on front so that's what it is. He is replacing his dd 65 pick up with this truck. Trying to get pics to post.

There's a guy who has a website dedicated to the GMC V6 engines. He's got a lot of information and also resources:

LOL, my Longhorn is the same way! Ordered with all the H/D stuff to haul a big a$$ camper around, but manual drums! (which have been completely rebuild and work surprisingly well btw, and I kinda like the direct feel of them)

I worked at marina at Kinkaid Lake in Ill. the owner had a 68 GMC loaded with everything but it had a 305. ran grate but needed constant valve work. It was typical of them from day one. never could handle the long halls on the highway. Bullitins about every 4-6 months about the latest valve trick modification or replacement info.
