Speed Warning Dash
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY KNOWLEGE ABOUT A SPEED WARNING DASH OR HAVE SOME LITRATURE ON THESE. I AM BUILDING ONE AND AM IN THE DARK ON THESE BECAUSE I HAVE NEVER BUILT ONE ,I HAVE BUILT MANY TACH DASHES BUT NEVER A SPEED WARNING DASH. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP 67-72:confused:

what is a speed warning dashs purpose? what the hell is it?

IT IS A DASH WITH A NEEDLE YOU SET ON A CERTAIN MILE PER HOUR AND WHEN YOU REACH THAT MILE PER HOUR IT GIVES A NOISE TO LET YOU KNOW HOW FAST YOU ARE GOING. THEY WERE MOSTLY USED IN MEDIUM DUTY TRUCKS 30-60 SERIES AND IT IS A VERY RARE OPTION.

I don't know much about them...the buzzer mounts up under the dash...they are extreemly annoying...and they were not an option in 70 if memory serves. I think 69 was the last year.

They were a pretty common option on cars in the 60's--buicks, olds, pontiac, etc. Truck units typically sell for $150 & up depending on what else is in the dash cluster (Tach, Vac, Air Pressure) and of course condition. Believe Andy is right that 69 may have been the last year offered as an option.

Thanks for the info on the speed warning. It was bugging me that I couldn't figure out what that was.

i'm getting ready to reassemble 3 of them that i had punched for tachs, 2 will be tach,vacuum, & speedwarning and one just tach & speedwarning. i don't have any pics or literature on them but i believe longhorn man is correct about 69 being the last year it was offered.
i'm curious about your statement about them being used mostly in 30-60 series trucks. i've owned several speedwarning clusters over the past 20+ years but i've never seen one in anything other than pickups and suburbans. have you personally seen them in the bigger trucks ? if so, i'm going to kick myself in the butt, i always give the bigger trucks a quick glance for tach and/or vacuum and walk away. i'm not sure if i can answer your question about your cluster but i'll p.m. you my phone number |

Speedwarning
The speed warning has a wiring harness that goes from the speedometer/circuit board to the buzzer. There is a cable w/knob on it to set the speed you want the warning set at, and the buzzer. You have to drill a hole in the bezel to mount the adjusting knob. That is about all that is to them. The problem is usually not the speedometer it is finding the rest of the parts. Hope this helps a little. If you have a truck later than 69 it would be a little out of place as the option was not offered on trucks after that. I just sold a nice restored speedwarning, tach, vacuum guage cluster as it would not look right on my 71. All the ones I have found were on 68 model trucks. This must be the year that most of them were installed. I am going to start giving the bigger trucks a better look from now on as I never thought they would be installed in them. It was always like Xmas when I found just a tach dash in one.

I HAVE PERSONALLY SEEN ONE IN A 40 SERIES TRUCK AND JUST ASSUMED THAT THEY WOULD MOSTLY COME IN BIGGER TRUCKS. THE ONE THAT I HAVE WAS A 69 BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT IS PRINTED ON THE BACK OF THE CIRCUIT BOARD. AND I ALSO WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS THE MAIN PURPOSE OF AN AIR PRESSURE GAUGE, I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN USED ON BIG TRUCKS BECAUSE MOST OF THE DASHES THAT I HAVE PULLED OUT OF BIG TRUCKS HAD OVERSPEED AND ? ON THE FUEL GAUGE WERE MOST 10-20 SERIES HAVE BRAKE AND TEMP. THANKS FOR ALL OF YOUR REPLIES. MINE IS A SPEED WARNING, TACH, AIR PRESSURE DASH.

Yours is the first one I have seen coming out of a big truck. There is hope! The air pressure gauge is mainly for the air brake system in the truck. Air pressure actuates the trailer brakes. If the truck has spring-powered emergency/parking brakes on it or is hauling a trailer w/spring emergency/parking brakes on it then the driver would want to know if he is loosing air pressure. When the air pressure gets below around 60psi the brakes set. Not a good thing if you are trucking down the road. That is what I would be using the gauge for.
