anybody have a manual tranny w/overdrive?
 

Just wondering if anyone had one of these and how much they liked it. Or has someone swapped in an OD or NV4500? I want to keep my stick but would love an overdrive cause it just seems like there should be one more gear there. maybe I just need to put in the 3.07 rear gears?

I have been in tha market and been looking for quite some time. Im not looking for just anything, ive been wanting a a New process A833. It was put behind hemis, fords, etc. But the Gm version was built in 80 -89 and came in vans and 1/2 ton trucks. its a 4 speed over drive, which many people hated cause it has no low 1st gear, which i absolutly dont need. I can pop the clutch in 2nd and burn em. If anyone knows where one is i would even been willing to travel for one. The rpo code is my6 and it uses a stock clutch setup and is not a top loader. That would be a nice christmas present.

I've done the NV4500 swap in place of a 4 speed in a 4x4. It's a pretty expensive swap, at least in the 4x4. If the rear gear change will do what you want I'd go that route first.

Huck's is a pretty sweet set up. He managed to incorperate the hyd clutch and everything. I drove it and it is cooler than 2 chicks kissing.

Just priced a Tremec 3450 5 speed for my 03 GMC 4.3, V6 and was surprised to hear $1150.00 from distributor. Tremecs are used in all 1500 series GM trucks south of the border and have a very good reputation. Good torque ratings and very quite. Might be worth a look..

I have a 250/6cyl in my 71 shortbed stepside.

I replaced my Saginaw 3-speed with a Tremec 3550 5-speed in April after the syncros went south in the 3-speed. Bought the Tremec with the mid location shifter from Forte's parts.

Didn't like the mid location shifter that Forte's provides. The handle lever is just too short and angled back to nearly hit the bench seat.

is the exclusive dealer for a mid location Pro 5.0 shifter that allows use of a bolt on Hurst shift lever. I needed to make a spacer to fill the difference from the 6mm bolts that the Pro 5.0 shifter uses and the 3/8 in. bolt holes in the Hurst shift lever. Used brass tubing to make up the difference.

I used my original bellhousing, flywheel, and clutch linkage. The clutch is a 10.4in. centerforce I for a mid 80's camaro V8 w/ T5 tranny. The throw out bearing is the one for the 71 truck V8 with manual tranny.

I had a local machine shop press fit a spacer to make up the difference in the diameter of the throwout bearing retainer to the diameter of the bellhousing hole in the truck bellhousing (4.685in. vs. 5.124in. on the truck bellhousing).

I needed to use a high hump tranny cover because the Tremec rested up against the low hump cover when installed. I used a auto tranny rear crosmember from Early Classic Enterprises to support the rear of the transmission. I had a new shorter driveshaft made by Denny's Driveshafts.

In retrospect I should have bought the transmission from Hanlon Motorsports. They would have sold me the better shifter and a TKO instead of a 3550 for the same price.

Everything works well now. I get another 3mpg highway. Around town is the same mpg but acceleration seems improved.

My 5 speed came out of a 96 silverado. bolts up. 5th gives me a drop of 800-1000 rpm. 350,Edlebrock,headers,hei,307posi. MPG=16in town and up to 20-21 on interstate. 1st gear is not too low--just nice. Hyd clutch not to bad to set up. Shifter required a high hump but it comes out towards the front so no seat issues at all.
Only problem unsolved is the trans uses electronic sensed speedo and I prefer the stock look of the dash. No simple way to convert so no speedo.

I believe they can take your original speedometer and put an electric sending unit compatible with the late model chevy transmission. Keep the original look intact.

The aftermarket Tremec that I used uses a cable operated speedometer connection, so I didn't have that problem with my truck.

I have a manual with 2 overdrives. The Tremec T56.
Here is a pic. I used the OEM clutch linkage and pressure plate. I had buy a 26 spline input clutch disk. Pm me if you want details .:)
