Opinions on retreads?
Hi guys, I'm getting to the point where I'm going to have to get new tires for my truck. I've been looking at a bunch of different options and kinda have decided on getting some Kumho M/T from tirerack.com. I want to get tires that will perform off road for the weekend wheeling I with my buddies and still be good on road tires cause I have to drive to school everyday. I've heard nothing but good things about these tires and I need it to be somewhat cheap, mainly cause i'm 17. Well now I stumbled across High-Tec Retreading (http://www.high-tec-retreading.com/index.html). I really don't have any experience with retreads and was wondering what you all thought about them, pros and cons. I still will probably get the Kumhos, but the retreads are still so much cheaper and I cant help but wonder how they'll work. Thanks for all your help.

i ruined three bedsides on a 77 gmc 4x4 that way, oh yeah, and an exhaust. i wouldn't advise on the retreads, especially if you want to venture very far from home. just my 2 cents

There was an article about High-tec-retread in Petersen's off road and they had good things to say.
I buy mine at Costco. Only thing is High-tec can give you an expensive specialty tire for a good price. Look at Costco first. I find I can get a new, brandname tire for about the same price as a recap. What size do you need? |
I would not recommend retreads - never met one I liked. Bandag is a major retreader; years ago I bought some, and they thumped because of the lump where the ends of the tread meet. IMO, new tires are a much better bargain, though a bit more expensive. I'm not familiar with High-tec; maybe they are better. Personally, I would only put recaps on a big rig so when you throw a tread, you have the redundancy of more tires on the same axle.

Thanks guys, that's kinda what I was thinking about them. Looks like I'll just be going with the Kumhos (33x12.5r15). Thanks again.

I have also heard good things about the Dunlop Mud Rovers, know a couple guys who have run them personally. I'm going to get a set of 35x12.5x15's for my truck. Only 108 bucks apeice at tirerack and I can get them for 116 each at sams club for the 35" tires.
