On 4X4's the V8's are in the six cylinder position. No one is exactly sure why GM did that but many have guessed that it is either to get the front drive shaft longer (less angle) or to get the weight back further. HEI ignitions will fit, barely. I had to cut the bolt that comes through the firewall which holds up the heater from the inside to get mine to fit. You should have an inch or two of clearance if you are running a non HEI unit.
