What I normally do is check the end play on the shaft. If it is more than .010 to .012 I remove the gear and use washers of the right thickness to adjust the end play. Before reinstalling the gear the shaft is removed, cleaned and lubed with "Lubri-plate". (If the bushings or shaft is worn, they are replaced).

After reinstalling the shaft, I install new advance weights and springs. When it is back together I set the advance curve on my distributor machine. (I use the kit from Summit but the advance kits are available from other sources, also).

The vacuum advance is checked for operation and replaced if necessary.
