What type of carb do you have on it ? The jets could be way too big and causing that 8 MPG. I have gone from 9MPG to over 12 just by changing the jets in my 84. Just some food for thought.

It is an older 600cfm Edelbrock Performer w/manual choke that came out of a friends junk bin. It may run rich, I see a lot of black in the exit pipes. I can get 9mpg if I drive like a granny, which is rare
