My 396 bb only uses 3-4 gallons a week . Of c12 race gas at the drag strip  You'll love the big block power , the gas you'll learn to live with . For what it's worth my 96 3500 w/ vortec 454 got a consistent 14 mpg , i thought that was pretty decent . Good luck with the k20.
