Are you mixing 305 manifolds with an older 350? The spacing on the bolt holes is different. If you look at the 350 crate engines in online pics, you can see that they have two holes drilled in them so both types of exhaust manifolds fit them. If that was the problem, it should affect both sides, though.

If it is just one side, Lisle tools makes a spreader that will spring it out a little bit so you can get the bolts started.
