I just ran out to my truck to check this and when I did this I didn't cut that red wire at all, just kept it attached to the plug. When you are all said and done, the red and white wires are left in the plug and the plug just dangles wherever.

I followed that same thread and had no problems and am very happy I did it, made a huge difference.
