Another related question (sorry to hijack my own thread)

How does the headlight switch mount to the dashboard? I removed the knob (yes, the right way), centered the switch behind the dash, screwed in that nut-like thing and inserted the knob. Works great, except when the headlights are off the knob sticks out like 2-3". Do I have an incorrect knob or am I missing some sort of spacer?
