I have run the 280 Magnum cam that you are talking about. It is an awesome camshaft! You have to build that motor up a little bit to take full advantage of the cam's potential though. It has a long duration and quite a bit of overlap hence the very rough idle that it has.

You either need a stall converter or a manual trans with that one because it idles between 850-900 r.p.m. and it has a very rough aggressive idle at that. It is a very bad ass sounding cam and I liked the one that I used to have in my 82 when I had it years ago. My engine was built around that particular cam though (higher compression pistons and ported and polished heads). For a stocker a 268 would be a much better choice, but I wouldn't go past a 270 at most. Just my honest opinion. ...Joe
