I preach on this stuff, but you should be careful about the silicone you use on any metal surfaces. Make sure the stuff you use is for automotive applications. If not, you will find that it causes rust where it comes into contact with the metal. I can say this because we used RTV extensively where I worked, and a bunch of it was used to paste ISO instructions to steel columns of the buildings. It WILL cause rust.
