I agree with willis0107, in temperate climates where they don't use salt on the roads it's really not necessary. I like to see what condition the metal is at all times and a poorly installed undercoating will hide a lot of the rust if the metal wasn't prepared properly.

I have a thin layer on my 68 gmc under the fenders that I'm going to remove and recoat them with a good coat of POR 15 or similar.
