that upside down number is the part number if I'm no mistaken. I know for a fact it is on my one ton (I goggled the # and it came up as exactly that, P/N for a 68 - 70 one ton chevy frame... go figure!)
Your frame looks just like mine in that gear box location.
I have also seen a partial vin under the cab on the passenger side... but here's the catch... it's on top of the frame. You'll have to remove the cab to clean and search.
I would go to them, not mention the fact that 99% of them had frame numbers... just tell them that the only numbers you can find are on the VIN tag and the SPID.
If your VIN tag is held on with original rivits, i would point that out to them too (rose bud rivits, shaped like a flower instead of round) If it has the wrong rivits, I would keep my mouth shut.
