Man don't give up! Rig up some kind of security device from an electric fence charger that will totally shock the crap out of anyone (other than you) when they touch the door handle!!

Seriously, I wouldn't give up, and it may be a continuation of the scam thing. Did you find some prints on the screwdriver?
