You are correct, E85 will get worse fuel economy than gasoline. This is because even though it's octane rating is much higher (over 100) than gasoline, E85's energy content is much lower than gasoline. One gallon of gasoline contains about 125,000 BTU where that same gallon of E85 only contains ~80,000 BTU. This means it takes about 1.5 gallons of E85 to take you the same distance as 1 gallon of gasoline.
