i plan on doing something close except my VIN will be correct and match the frame numbers, i'll be adding the options i've installed but like you said, i always tell people that the "goodies" are added, it did not come from the factory equipped like that. as long as you disclose the facts i really don't see a problem. i'm not sure about the "legal" side of it though since you are taking a 2wd body and swapping it to a 4wd chassis. sounds like a nice project. i'm considering swapping my 72 suburban onto a 4wd chassis at some point and i'll have to check with calif. DMV at that time for any legality issues.
