In all of the manual shift vehicles I have ever had, (several) I always put the tranny in the highest forward gear (4th in a 4 speed, 5th in a 5 speed) before shifting into reverse. This always kept grinding to a minimum. I have had manual trannys in the following and this always worked:
71 Chevy El Camino SS 4 speed
82 Ford Escort 4 speed
70 Chevy Nova 4 speed
86 Ford Tempo 5 speed
80 GMC 1 ton 4 speed
93 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 5 speed
72 Chevy 1/2 ton 3 OTT
71 GMC 1/2 ton 3 OTT
