Ed,
I too had the same issue, I checked into having mine boiled out, the quote was $125.00 and was told that it may not survive due to the rust and crud and we would end up with "pin holes" , It would more that likely need to be coated with a sealer.
So I opted to have it sent out and have it "cloned" only this time made with aluminun instead of sheetmetal..
I got lucky and found an NOS aux pickup/sending unit on ebay..
