DirtyLarry's running around with a high hp/tq 8.1L big block/nv4500 in his 78 K10. It's putting out more hp/tq than your 383 small block for sure. The trans does fine. Yes it shifts better than a dump truck 465 muncie, but it is by no means a speed shifting gear jamming car transmission. Driving by dumping the clutch is just going to be hard on any trans. Not to mention the abuse to the drivelines and the diffs. A semi-floating 14 bolt is going to leave you on the side of the road or trail if those tires have traction and it snaps one of the c-clip axles.

It's your rig and you can do with it what you want though. A 390hp 3/4 ton sub still isn't going to win many drag races anyway if you plan on beating it to death.
