Looks like by the front edge from the pic, but it really doesn't matter. A new gasket will take care of it if the heads check out okay and aren't cracked.

Did you pull the heads because it was smoking coolant out the exhaust or running hot? If so, I would have them completely checked while you have them out.

Now if you pulled the heads just cause you wanted to see the inside of the engine, it may just be coolant that was still in the passages when you loosened them.
