The system you set up should be able to draw gasses from the crank case to the bottom of the carb or the intake. You should have a breather on the oil fill tube. The Vette 327's had a hole in the block on the driver's side rear near the distributor and a vent tap that looked like this and was bolted to the block. The cylinder was a oil baffle for the system and was in the lifter gallery.


The PCV valve would either be in line or the type that actually screwed into the bottom of the carb.
This is a photo of the 65 365hp Vette 327 that I put in the 66 C10 I had. Note the breather cap on the fill tube.


If your block doesn't have provisions for the tap and the fill tube it is pretty hard to vent the crankcase properly with those valve covers.
