I would suggest you try blowing out the old fuel lines (from front to rear) before you proceed. There could very well be enough "crud" in the lines to cause this kind of behavior. The tank may also be full of junk. Removing the tank and flushing the tank itself may be necessary, and it's not that big of a job.
