Here's a link to a thread on this.The dimple is for mounting the gearbox.It has a slight protrusion that does not let it mount against the frame without the dimple.They also make a spacer to set it out from the frame though some report problems.I believe this is because they don't adjust to "center" the gearbox but haven't done one myself.

Gearboxes for the 68-72 trucks are 4 1/2 turns lock to lock.Later 73 up are 3 1/2 turns.I prefer the later box since it has a stiffer feel to it.The 68-72 boxes feel somewhat "mushy" to me.You can use either but will need to use the pitman arm for the year of suspension.
