In these old trucks, it's all about the gears. I pull a 15000lb trailer behind my '72 with a 350 built marine spec with an sm465 and a 14 bolt FF with 3.73s. It's a little slow on the uptake but cruises along just fine. By marine spec I am sure it had about 300ft/lb but about a few gerbils worth of hp. I don't need to burn tires but I do need to get serious miles from it.

Without being so longwinded, I'd stay with the 350. You can make them into just about whatever you want them to be.
