I'd put it all togethor first and see how it runs with the gears and tranny you have.
You're right about the o/d.
Sometimes you need a higher ratio rear gear combined with the o/d to keep your motor happy.
I call that the 'sweet spot'.
Every motor is different.
I ran a sbc that got it's best mileage at 3400 rpm and 85 mph.
