I'm not sure what body shop prices are like down there, but up here a decent shop runs you at least $90-$100 an hour. So $1800 only buys you about 18-20 hours. It seems like this would take a bit longer than that.

As far as shorting the bed goes. Sure you can buy Aftermarket panels for about $1000, but you still have to deal with the floor. I haven't priced out a shortie bed floor but I would imagine they are around 5-7 hundred. So you are already at at least $1500 and you haven't even touched the frame yet. Sounds like a pretty decent deal to me.
