A few things can be the issue if you aren't pulling fuel from the tank.
You can have a defective fuel pump, or an issue with the rod it uses to function. Do some research on that.
You can have a dirty tank that clogged up the lines when it tried sucking up the first bit of fuel.
Yes it's ideal to replace any run of rubber hose with hard line, and something you should look into. If you just need to see if your truck is running, don't worry about it.
