Never having taken one apart before, I'm going to bet that flat ring with the four notches has to be unscrewed.
MAC, Snap-on and other companies sell a Dana 44 front axle socket that's got four teeth on it. My guess is that socket engages those notches, and you unscrew that ring, which is holding the pieces in.
