I pulled my cover (fluid will start running out when you remove the bottom bolts) then just reached in and scooped out the small amount left in the diff, and wiped it out with a rag. With the cover off, you can count gear teeth to get the ratio. Number of teeth on ring divided by number of teeth on pinion = gear ratio.

You didn't ask, but mine took 3 quarts of Mobil-1 full synthetic 75W-90. Got a new gasket and used Permatex 81182. It's made to use with gear oil -- good stuff.
